After 24 meetings with just about anyone who is anyone in Wellington from the PM downwards (Helen Clark very impressive) we have completed our programme in Wellington. As you would imagine their was some major political fallouts within out group, but that was mainly between me and Labour Peer Baroness Golding. Michael Howard tended to agree with everything I said. NZ Parliament has some weird rules which our whips would really like. One was voting with a block vote on the grounds all the members of a political group were in the building and would clearly vote this way so why trouble them to come and vote personally! MP's elected as additional members could also be sacked on the spot by the party if they rocked the boat (not those from constituencies. They have a German type additional member PR system here)

Now as a treat we have arrived in Christchurch. Had a busy programme discussing nitrate pollution in soils (some of my collagues were particularly gripped by that!) Stood in a field talking about organic beetroot, and looked at a lot of sheep. In the evening had a very good dinner at the Chritschurch Club, very formal and just like our London Clubs, but in a wooden colonial building. Visted the Antarctic Centre which was an opportunity to get some scientits to confirm to Tory Andrew Tyrie I haven't been making all this climate change stuff up. Had a room with a Antarctic Blizzard experience with freezing winds to simulate gales. Told them it was colder in Cleethorpe in January. Off to a vineyard tomorrow which has got Pat excited unlike the Blizzard experience.
