Where I stayed
Hospitality Woods RV Park
After a quick cup of coffee we closed down the trailer and traveled to Ellsworth, Maine. Along the way we stopped for Fred to grab a few geocaches and for me to grab a few pictures. One of the caches was located in Belfast, where I was able to snap a shot of the harbor. Then as we approached Bucksport we noticed a large bridge looming in the distance. We were able to photograph the structure from a nearby pull-off. The bridge goes over Penobscot Bay. In Bucksport is a memorial to Jonathan Buck, who was the founder of Bucksport. The memorial has a strange design in the marble which appears to be a leg with a foot. There is a legend that goes with this unusual mark. Some say it is because he was instrumental in the execution of a witch and this is her mark. Efforts to remove the mark has failed as it always returns.
From there we made our way to our campground in Ellworth and after getting set up and eating lunch we drove the short distance to Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park. Our first stop was Mt. Cadillac, which we had visited over 20 years ago with the girls, only this time we could actually see something from the top. Although hazy we could see quite a distance.
We then stopped by Jordon Pond which was carved out by the glaciers. They also left the two mountains at the end of the pond named the Bubbles.
Next we traveled to the western side of the island to visit the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. We headed there toward evening hoping to get the sun setting behind the lighthouse, but clouds prevented a colorful sky.
With night upon us, we wended our way back to the campground picking up dinner along the way.
Tomorrow we will visit the eastern side of Acadia and plan to have dinner at the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound. You can't visit Maine and not eat lobster.
