From Oaxaca we had a long trip over to the Gulf coast to Veracruz from where we caught a bus straight to Xalapa and were met by Ivan´s childhood best friend, Paul, and his Mexican wife Gaby. Paul has been living in Mexico for nine years and they run an English language centre together. They were incredibly kind and took a week off from the business to show us around Xalapa and we had a fantastic week together. Xalapa is a sophisticated and thriving city. We visited the small town of Coatapec for a walk around the square and a few churches, as well as the village of Xico to see the Texolo waterfall nestled among the banana and coffee plantations. We also had a day out in Veracruz, sampling the great coffee at Parroquia, walking around the zocala, visiting the fort at San Juan de Ulua, the aquarium, and having shrimp at Boca del Rio. It was also good just to hang out with them and do ´normal´things like go to the supermarket, take the dog for a walk, eat at local restaurants, and go to the cinema. We even managed a night out at the ´Ibiza´nightclub, partying ´til 5.30 in the morning and finishing the night off in true Mexican fashion with tacos del pastor (the equivalent of our kebabs but much tastier). We were sad to leave them but Paul and Gaby are moving to larger premises and expanding their business so we left them to get back to their busy lives and we got back into our routine of catching another bus and exploring the next city - Puebla.
