After the underwhelming experience of Dublin I was having my doubts about this country. This wasn't helped by the experience picking up our rental car:

The driver who picked me up shared with me a dark picture of what people are currently going through due to the economic crisis. He lost his business and his wife has been out of work for 18 months. We just read about the crisis in the newspaper back home but the topic is on everyone's lips here, Ireland has been smashed by the downturn. In a week the country votes on whether it will accept new "austerity" measures - basically this would mean further government cuts to try and stabilise the economy.

While trying to find an internet cafe in the morning (didn't put enough money on the credit card for the rental car!) I stumbled into one of the rougher parts of town - the place was filled with drunk and desolate people and smelled like a cesspit.

Thanks Dublin but not the greatest first impression! All that changed this afternoon though after we finally sorted our rental car and hit the road to Galway. Now this is the Ireland I was hoping for!

When we arrived we went for an explore along the beautiful coast then had a enormous pub meal in town. Pubs stretch right along where we are staying in town and even though it was a Tuesday night they were going off. One we found had locals doing Irish folk dancing which the girls loved.

Galway nightlife is very cool, would come back here in a flash. I'm also loving having our own car and travelling independently again. More driving tomorrow, off to cliffs of Moher then on our way to Kilkenny.
