after the excitement of yesterday today was designated a vacation day.  the only thing we had planned for sure was a luau with chris and dana late in the afternoon.  tam got to meet her goal of sleeping in with no alarm clock, as did i just not quite as late.  after a lazy morning we headed out for lunch and a little souvenier shopping.  doug and tanya had forgotten to return their snorkel gear so we took it in to kihea and dropped it off for them.  while out there we stopped at some of the local shops and looked for trinkets and baubles.  after a few hours of shopping i made tam buy me a beer at a neat little tiki restaurant.  then it was home for a shower and out to the luau.
the luau was really neat, it was held at the grand marriot and the show consists of hawaiian, polynisian, tongan and tahitian dances (i think that's what they all were).  they roasted a pig in a pit of sand and hot coals and served it to us later for dinner.  the food was really good, which is more than i can say for the drinks.  the only beer they had was bud light, which is understandable since that's what 65% of the country drinks and another 25% will drink if offered.  on the other hand, i took this as my opportunity to finally try a mai tai.  these seem to be the official drink of hawaii and i've never had one so i thought it would be appropriate.  i had a couple and they weren't bad but not very eventful.  i think chris had better luck with his pina coladas cuz he was getting a little goofy by the end of the night.  the dancing and music was great, there were four couples dancing and a hostess that would narrate and sing with the musicians.  there was even a cute little girl who had a dance number, she must have been about eight years old.  at the end one of the men danced with fire, which was very awesome.
