A good friend at a recent BBQ shared his view of the correlation between  a real adventure and preparation.  He said the more demanding and uncomfortable the preparation, the more exciting and memorable the adventure would be.    I did ponder upon this comment for some time, and wonder if my current 'sprung like a coiled spring' disposition will therefore lead to a heightened euphoria of whatever it is we are soon to discover/ uncover/ endure.

We are headed bush.  But news on the grapevine is that we will be sharing the bush with a rather unwieldy and untamed race called the Grey Nomads.  My sources tell me that they are a species that enjoys the freedom of luxury camping by pop-up caravan, celebrate every 4 o’clock as beer o’clock,  ogle at every sunset with wine and nibblies, and suck greasy fingertips post the  lamb chop BBQ for bedtime tipples.  After reviewing the strict budget that will curtail our viticultural tastebuds , I rather think these may be the species worth hooking up with when the esky runs low.

So, introducing myself.   I will be your travel guide, language translator, back seat driver, hunter & gatherer (I love a sharpened  axe),  grocery shopper, hitchhiker, stereo cranker-upperer, evening’s entertainment, cook &  cleaner, garbage collector, botanist, hill climber .... that is enough.    So, now meet my other half - Roelof .  He will be the driver and winch operator, and not much more!

Our adventure choice for the next period of time has been to ditch the Sydney jobs, rent our place out, invest in Landcruiser Troopy plus better camp gear, and buggar off to explore our own backyard (aka, Australia) for 6 months – it could be rushed, it’s a big place.  How can we ensure that our adventure does not cause you to snore loudly?  Because we’ve bought some good friends along with us that will assist us in reaching strange, unpopulated areas:  our mountain bikes and an inflatable kayak.  In fact, the guy at the camp store said that if we come under croc attack whilst in the inflatable kayak , we can return for a refund...I do believe he was pulling my leg.  We plan to get off the beaten track and camp with Mother Nature only.  Maybe a few bugs and creatures permitted.  With the assistance of Google Earth we want to find parts of this land where we can make the first footprint, well maybe I mean shoeprint in case of barefooted  Indigenous traveller's spirits.

It’s time to get our adventure va-va-vooming and to release the coiled spring within me.  Our home has been tetris-ed into our garage, the car has been sold, we are in a state of limbo as we endure a few nights with ‘The Fockers’ (excellent for last minute washing!!), our kit is in rows on the floor being "sorted" (an ever continuous occupation), and I am still trying to locate excitement button.

It’s time for another good glass of red with The Fockers.  After all, we’ll be on casks soon enough!

Enjoy our blog.  We’ll have enough time on our hands to write it!

Cheers,

Amanda and Roelof  x
