Ive been dealing with a slight bother here in Jaco the last few days. I only came up to this Costa Rican vacation town with a seedy underbelly in search of a surfboard, but being unable to face the light of day Ive ended up staying longer than expected. You see, on my last day in Dominical I spent many hours of the afternoon surfing. Being a west facing beach, the sun was directly in my eyes for hours. When youre mother told you not to stare directly at the sun there was a very specific reason: it burns your eyeballs.

For the next two days I felt like a nocturnal creature. Any sort of light exposure would make me hiss in agony and retreat back to the depths. My eyes were leaking more fluid than a Costa Rican exhaust pipe. Unfortunately, since I had previously lost my sunglasses I was forced to spend my time with my right eye completely shut all the time and my hand cupped over it for backup. Luckily my left eye had been spared, but still, Ive never tripped so much in my life; I will never take my depth perception for granted again. After enough strange looks from the locals I was finally able to feel my way into a store and buy a new pair of sunglasses.

My eyes have since began to recover (after a brief relapse when I hit the surf again) but the redness that remains has drawn a lot of attention from the local street pharmacists. I am offered weed about once per block and apparently, if you have red eyes and its assumed you smoke a lot of weed, you must also be into various other un-Christian hobbies such as cocaine and prostitution. So I get a few of those offers on a daily basis as well. Which is great, now I can finally stop searching for them.
