We decided to take the supposedly scenic inland route to Lake Tekapo, which is the gateway to the southern alps. It's probably much nicer in the winter when it's a ski area but you also have to cross some boring flat plains. However after 5 hours we finally hit the gorgeous Lake Tekapo surrounded by snowy mountains offset by a beautiful stone church at its head. We decided to shun campervan parks as much as possible and aim to find idyllic spots on our own each night. We headed 10km out of town and were rewarded with a beautiful lakeside spot all to ourselves.

We were getting to like the van life as we supped some beer and tucked into venison casserole. Amazing what you can rustle up in these vans.
