We were tempted to take advantage of the cheap packages available to stay at one of the lodges in Chitwan National Park but decided against it as it was not the best season for seeing animals.

Instead we caught the bus to Sauhara just outside the park and stayed at a cheap lodge and made arrangements from there.

After the cool of the mountains it was exceedingly hot and humid in the jungle and we had a mountain of washing to get through.

We decided to do 2 things, a 3-hour elephant walk and a visit to the elephant sanctuary. We can now say we have ridden an elephant but after 3 hours we were happy to get down as it wasn't too comfortable ploughing through the fields with big insects and lizards landing on your lap. As expected there was no chance of seeing tiger or leopard and we only just managed to track down a rhino right at the end to get a few photos.

We hired bikes to ride to the elephant sanctuary, weaving through water buffalo and big piles of elephant poo!! The sanctuary was basic but with lots of baby elephants who were very inquisitive and we were able to touch. Even at a young age you have to be careful as they are much stronger and heavier than us!!
