Hoi An is a very piteresque town on the coast. Several hundred years ago it was a major sea port and on the trading routes between europe and the far east, but the river silted up and the port was moved to Danang. This means that many of the original Chinese and Japenese trading houses and Temples exsist, as well as two or three totally intact ancient streets of houses, along the river, which now only houses small fishing boats.

The major tourist attraction in Hoi An are the 200+ taylors shops in the town. This is THE place to come in SEA to get clothes made. With so many shops it is overwhelming to choose a decent one, so we just picked one out of the guide book, and ended up at what we have since been told was pretty much the best Taylot in Hoi An. We went for our initial consultation, in a beautiful old house full of fabric, at about 1pm, and went back for our first fittings at 8pm the same night! Dunc and Chris both had suits made (inevitably of just about the most expensuive fabric in the shop) and I had a silk evenign dress made. 2 more fittings and 36 hrs later we had our goods, for very little money indeed and an amazing experience.

Negotiating the Communist Burocracy at the post office was not such a good experience, and if our clothes ever make it back (4 months on the boat) I will be amazed!
