The final countdown has begun...
Well we are in our final week prior to departure with our first destination being Los Angeles and more specifically Disney Land. Now I know that is not much of a travel destination but when you have a 7 and a 4 year old along we figured this would be a great way to begin our around the world quest.

With it being 7 days out all I can say is I can't wait to get on the plane. I have reached my limits around the planning, the prep, the anticipation, the dealing with getting renters and house sitters and vaccinations and more vaccinations, the cleaning, the packing, the re-packing, the trips downtown to Mountain Equipment Co-Op for some other thing I forgot the last time. :)

That said, we feel pretty confident that we are pretty much ready. Or at least as ready as a family of 4 can be before departing on a quest that will see them live out of 3 duffle/packs and 3 carry-ons for the next 9 months. It is incredulous really when I realize that out of a large walk-in closet full of clothes I am now reduced to one pair of jeans, one pair of all-occasion black pants, a couple pairs of shorts, a few shirts, sandals, hiking shoes and a bunch of underwear and some swim wear. The kids were much easier to pack for and as for my wife Shannon, she has done an amazing job as she controlled a large majority of that walk-in closet I referred to earlier. Her sacrifices have been even larger than mine, so I salute her efforts in this area.

As ready as I feel, I know the remaining 7 days will fly by at a crazy pace and we will have some last minute scrambling. Doesn't every trip or journey start that way. And with that some crazy making final moment decisions on what comes and what stays behind as the duffle packs are weighed, jostled, reconfigured and reworked to ensure we have all that we need. I fully anticipate that moment somewhere over the next month or so where we will look at certain things we brought and go 'what were we thinking' and grieve the fact that some other item was overlooked or forgotten in the last minute scramble. All I can say is thank God for Credit Cards.

All in all, the prep and planning has been a blast and the activity level has certainly been ratcheted up over the past 6 weeks. But now it is time to go...

I'm going to Disney Land yeah-whoo... (happily only for 3 days)

Next update will be from Costa Rica.

Adios,

Mark and Shannon
