Saturday, January 2, 2010

On frosty morning (01:20) of January the 2nd, four of us departed from Riga, Latvia to face great winter adventures at Luosto which is located in Lapland, Finland.

We travelled by car (Mazda CX-7) to Tallinn to catch the ferry to Helsinki. The weather was perfect for anything, except for driving. It was 20 degrees (celcius) below 0 and was snowing heavily when we approached Tallin. After refuelling our vehicle we have headed for D ferry terminal.

The sea seemed to be rough in Tallinn bay, but was OK afterwards. We have landed in Helsinki on schedule, at 09:30 am. Tallink ferry was comfortable enough for a sail of 2 hours. It was hard to get a nap as we all were quite excited about the oncoming adventures.

We had a 600 km still to go on the first day as we departed from ferry in Helsinki. So we headed for highway to Lahti as soon as we could in order to arrive to Oulu at around 18:00 pm.  Our drive to Oulu was very long and annoying as our speed was mostly limited to 100 on highway and 80 on main roads, although surface allowed us to perform better.

Anyway, we arrived to Oulu at 18:00 and checked in at BestWestern Apollo. The hotel was not fancy, but provided all essentials at great price. We have left our belongings in rooms and rushed outside as we were eager to test our outfit at -28. Walk around town took us two hours and we arrived back frozen but satisfied.

We had a little drink during our dinner and went to bed. First day was long and exhausting, especially for the driver, so we fell asleep immediately.
