Today was a travel day. We left Veracruz and headed southeast over hill and valley through small towns, villages, and a larger town or two. The roads were generally terrible. The topes or speed bumps are everywhere. Only the last 40 of the 191 miles was on a decent road-divided and limited access like our freeways in the US, but only two lanes each way. It seemed wonderful after the roads we'd been on.

When driving through the towns and villages, women, men and children are standing by the topes selling different types of foods. Dried banana strips, pineapples, pancakes in plastic bags, oranges--peeled and ready to eat in plastic bags, sausages, BBQed chickens, masa (we think), honey, some kind of liquid in a jar, sometimes orange juice in a plastic bag. We've found that buildings that have rebar sticking out the top aren't finished and therefore aren't taxed. Most of the buildings are in some state of construction or disrepair. There are tiendas (shops) everywhere on the side of the road. Small comidas serving breakfast and lunch are everywhere. I don't think this country has any food shortages. There are sugar cane fields with men hacking away with their machetes and loading the cut cane on trucks that seem too small for their enormous loads.

We are dry camped tonight on a traffic circle with two huge statues of naked men wrestling or something in the middle. We had a "Guess who's coming to dinner" dinner. Eight couples agreed to host dinner and prepare something, and then five minutes before dinner time other eight couples would draw names to see where they were going to dinner. They also had to fix something to take. It was lots of fun and we got to know another couple on a one-to-one basis. We ended up with two main courses, which was part of the fun.
