The roads are really nice into Slatina but everything else seems very outdated. The Amish should be ashamed of how much technology they use compared to rural Western Romanıa. Most of the people were working the fields with scythes. Speaking of the first person I saw carrying a scythe was only wearing flip flops and small green shorts which were hanging a bit too low. My initial thought was this is what it looks like when the Grimm Reaper heads to the beach.
Horses and cows seem to be able to roam where they liked for the most part. Unfortunately so do the dogs. They are everywhere. I expected them but it is still frightening when they chase after you and appear to try and bite your legs
I arrived in Slatina and the place was a mess with very little coordination. A lot of these places have at least one main area near center town that is nice, but despite riding through most of the city I saw nothing of the sort.
My hotel was easy enough to find as it was a large yellow building. Getting in was another thing. I went to what I assumed was the main entrance but I could only see doors for restaurant, storage and staff only. I walked around building but there nothing on the other side. I went back to another building that was part of the same complex but it was the bus company and industrial machinery part of the chain??? I was tired after 164km and outrunning dogs all day. I went back to original spot and sure enough there was a small door next to the restaurant door that said hotel but it was open and I did not see it the first time.
I go to reception and the person speaks not one word of English. This happens and I never had issues before. It appears there is no reservation for my name despite my booking number
I walked around looking for a grocery store and I got a bad vibe. I am not saying I felt in danger but close. I did not feel very welcomed and could not trust anyone to not scam me in some way. There was nothing nice in the area. I head back to hotel. It has no A/C and the windows have no screens so the instant I open the window mosquitoes come flying in. So I suffer in the heat and did not sleep at all. Not just because of the heat but the damn roving packs of dogs barking and fighting all night long.
To top the day off I find out from Cat that the apartment I booked in Bucharest did not seem to exist and the number was out of service. Welcome to Romania!!!
