Milestone - Reached 1000km mark!

As I got up all excited to reached Budapest the clouds attempted to kill my mood. Rain, rain and ...wait rain. Oh wait finally last 30 km it cleared up and became very hot very fast. I think steam was coming off my body. The roads were fairly good until the last part when the pavement was more like large rocks glued together. With all the weight in the backpack it begins to take a toll on the shoulders. I am a big boy I can take it. I do have to say the lack of cobblestones in Budapest was inviting the cabs were not. When coming into the city I could not believe where the GPS was taking me. I had to stop to get my bearings and sure enough bikes were allowed on the route it was suggesting - OK - sure, why the hell not.

Once I got into downtown core over the bridge I was using the bus lanes as much as possible. The problem was that there was such deep grooves in the pavement I could not get too far to the right. Buses were fine and waited to go around or I would slow and move to side when possible. Taxis on the other hand thought it was appropriate to stay their ground and play a game of lets see how brave (or stupid - I let you choose the word) this biker is when we graze his arm with our side mirrors. Shades of biking out to Manotick outside of Ottawa where all the suburbanites who drive their giant SUVs for work commute don't understand why someone would bike and like to do the same.

What is so great about today - not only do I get to see one of the world cities but I get to spend two days with Cat. I arrived and got checked in around 2:00pm. and the girls showed up only 30 minutes after me. very good timing.

Budapest is much larger than I thought and was a mix of restored beautiful buildings and run down beautiful buildings. It definitely was lively though not as inviting as Bratislava or Prague. There was so much history so many things to do and see. The girls and I just walked around some of the downtown but mostly along the river with fantastic views of the castle, museums and the fantastic parliament building. Which I can't believe was not some major cathedral - so nice to see something that ornate used for administrative reasons instead of supernatural.

Over all it was a nice day once the rain stopped and the girls arrived. Definitely a city you need more than 2 days in.
