28th April – Tuesday 1st May

The four days in Perth went by in a blur of relaxation, rain and
sunshine, pool & spas, walks on Trigg and Scarborough beaches, bbqs, meeting
folks and kids playing. But the fourth day was definitely the highlight...

Tuesday May 1st

Wow what a day! We all agreed it was the best day yet of the adventure. We woke early and drove to Freemantle where we got on a ferry and headed across to Rottnest Island. Or ‘island of rats’ as the Dutch who discovered it called it - because of the native quokkas they found and thought that they were giant rats.  The quokkas are super cute and just wander around the island quite oblivious to the tourists. We hired bikes - as there are no cars on Rottnest Island, and rode around the island in the sunshine, we had so much fun! Astrid struggled up many hills and remained in high spirits when she found the going tough we were very proud of her. Amon had ‘easy street’ as he sat in a trailer at the back of Ants bike. We went to an old Army base, swam in crystal clear beach and spotted quokkas. We nearly missed the bike hire place as we were on one side of the island and had to ride like mad to get them back – they had closed up but luckily someone was there so we could return them and get the deposit back – phew! True Ant & Shaz style! Returning on the ferry we were all exhausted but very happy. Driving back we watched the sun set over the Indian Ocean, a giant orange disk sliding into the deep blue ocean – was very, very beautiful. We picked up pizza on the way then kicked back chuffed with the day.
