What I did
We arrived at Naracoorte NP in the late arvo. We did the camper trailer set up and cooked dinner in record time – 45 minutes! The next morning we went to the Naracoorte Caves in the NP, they are the only World Heritage site in South Australia. The cave systems are MASSIVE. We did a guided tour in the morning of the Victoria Fossil Cave. The cave itself was amazing, and so extensive. Then after going underground 25 metres or so we viewed a fossils site – palaeontologists' heaven! Trapped between the layers of earth from 500,000 years ago are the remains of gigantic extinct Australian marsupials, found nowhere else on earth except here in Australia – freaky but very, very cool!
In the afternoon we went to the Wet Caves and wandered around, great wondrous stalagmites and stalactites, and more fossilised relics of the past. The Fossil Museum was awesome – life size replicas of the extinct marsupials (that moved and made noises) and rainbow serpents. Astrid and Amon loved the museum, saying it was the best thing they had done so far, fair call too, it was pretty cool!
But now… the rain.
