After 2 buses, 2 taxis and 1 plane (via Belo Horizante) we arrive at 11pm in the town of Ouro Preto. Not bad considering when we left Salvador we didn't have any tickets.  It's quite exciting to be at a foreign airport with a "lets see what plane we can catch to some destination more or less close where we are hoping to go" attitude...

The official tourist site for this place describes it as...

"A fabulous and lovely 18th-century town village deeply stuck in the valleys of Minas Gerais' mountains. Anachronistic, amazing, fascinating... Ouro Preto resurges as a vision, a mirage amidst the dense mist of dawn. The impression for first-time visitors is exciting. All of a sudden, it seems as if a journey back in time is a reality. A pilgrimage of the living mixing up with a pilgrimage of the dead."

It is indeed lovely.  A town enriched by properity produced from the industry of mining for Gold and precious gems such as Amethyst, Aqua Marine, Emerald,  Tourmaline etc etc.

We are staying in a lovely original Portugese colonial mansion called Pouso do Chico Rey Pousada.  Our room has fantastic views across this steep hilly town onto vistas which many eloborately decorate Churches and the mixed terrocota roofs of our neighbours.
Your can see place for yourself at their impressive website
http://www.pousodochicorei.com.br/ , which includes virtual 360 tours of all the rooms including our apartment (number 6) - isn't technology great.  (mum i put this in especially for you).

We intend to see the mine whilst we are here as well as perhaps 1 of the many many museums here.

I'll post some pictures soon...

I'm plased to say that my various injuries are getting better (especially my knee and ankle - helping me not to forget too quickly Machupicchu) although i think my back may need an osteopath when I get to Rio!

Next stop Rio de Janeiro via another night bus tonight.
