Six months ago I had no idea what the name of the Capital of Honduras was....and I'm pretty good with geography.  A month or so after formalizing this trip to Honduras to do volunteer dental work with Cape Cares, I finally learned how to pronounce the name of the city. OK, I'm a bit slow.....Tegucigalpa...tay-goose-a-gahl-pa or Teguc (Tay-goose) for short.

Many of the international flights to Honduras land in the capital.  I left Detroit at 6 am and arrived in Honduras about noon after a three hour flight from my layover stop in Atlanta. The landing in Teguc was considered one of the most dangerous in commercial aviation. A short runway and the approach around mountains the reason.  Following the crash of a plane landing several years ago the runway was lengthened and a hill on the approach removed making the landing safer, but it still is an unusual approach. Planes must bank almost completely around the field before touching down.  I have included a video of the landing for those of you who are aviation geeks!

I was met by Leopoldo and taken to my hotel.  I had the afternoon and evening free.  I chose to take a cab to the main park/square in town called Parque Central (Central Park).

Honduras is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.  Teguc showed it.  The city is pretty run down and the crime level is apparently quite high.  After a couple of hours walking around the center of town I took a cab back to my hotel which was located next to the former Presidential Palace.

I was unsure if Honduras celebrated the Cinco-de-Mayo Holiday.  I got my answer at 6:30 Saturday morning as I was awakened by a half an hour of firecrackers going off in the lot behind my hotel.  There was an event happening in the lot of the former Presidential Palace that day apparently opening with the fireworks!  Several photos are included.

I was picked up about 10:45 by Leopoldo and we went to the airport to meet the folks flying in that day.
