Had quick look around Sacremento - nothing there accept the state capitol building. Took the tour then drove to Lake Tahoe.

Was walking around the lake tonight as it was getting dark and caught first site of a bat. There were quite a few small ones buzzing by. The rubbish tins around here all have covers on them that have to be opened by putting your hand in the lid and pulling up a leaver. Is to prevent bears getting in them. There were a few in town last night apparently. Have not seen any yet - was hoping to see some at Yellowstone as they have both the brown and grizzly. Have seen a number of bison and elk on the trip so far. But by far the best thing to date were the fire flies near Boston. I did not know what was happening - i kept seeing these little bright lights appearing and then vanishing, in all directions, some close some further away. It was like something from out of space. Someone told me they were fire flies. Another thing i saw was when i was swimming in the Colorado River in Moab. These things with heads above the water were circling around in a quite part of the river waiting for food to float by. They were just far enough away that i could not tell what they were. Every now and then they would make a loud flapping noise and go under the water. Once i saw these things i decided i was no going back in - they could have been alligators. I later learned they would have been river ottas. Just don't see this stuff in nz.

Postscript:- went for a run this morning. Don't think those things are bats, just weird birds.
