Oliphant to Kane Pennsylvania:
Stats - 543 km and 8 hours of driving
Our first day is behind us now. We left at 7:40 this morning, on a crisp clear day. The sun rising over Sky Lake and the Pike River.
We crossed into the US at noon and entered our first state - New York. Instead of following Highway #219 down through Ellicottville, we veered off to the Southwest to follow the 'Seaway Trail' along the shore of Lake Erie. We did this for about 2 hours, including a lunch break at Hamburg Town Beach where we sat on a log by the water's edge
When we turned away from the lake we stuck mostly to 2 lane blacktop all the way to Kane. Almost no cars, just Amish laundry on the line. Drove through Allegany State Park (NY) and Allegheny National Forest (PA). Same land different name?!? We arrived at Kane Manor and were struck by the size of the place. Although it is old and being renovated by the owner Dave Kreig, you can tell this is a house with a elegant past . Situated on the edge of town on 40 - 50 acres of land, the house is rock solid. As I write this I am sitting in the beautiful big living room, while Donna reads on the couch opposite mine. This place is just what we were looking for on our first night.
Kane is a small town which reminded us in some ways of Wiarton. We walked 'downtown' to have dinner at the Texas Hot Lunch. A good dinner for two for $20 with tip, not bad!
Tomorrow we're off to the Kinzua Lookout and then on to Mechanicsburg, PA to meet up with John & Kara Arnold.
I had a wonderful day of driving with my 'travelling companion', my wife, my soulmate & best friend - Donna. There is no one in the world I would rather be doing this with!
