Happy 4th of July from Denali!

Today we took a 5.5 mile hike about 45 minutes away from the resort. It started out cloudy, but cleared up to be a gorgeous day!  We had a great guide who really knew his plants, birds (including their songs), and landscape.  We're not normally what you’d call "hikers" but we all held up well and were able to enjoy it.  We saw various birds and some squirrels, but no large animals.  We did have a momma spruce grouse who alternately pretended to be injured and act aggressive to lure us away from her nest.  She actually “led” us down the trail.

After our hike we returned to the lodge and sat on a balcony facing Mount McKinley.  Despite the clearing skies, the mountain remained encased in clouds and was not visible.   We’ve been told that it has only been visible 3 days out of the last 2 weeks.  We’re still on the lookout, but not keeping our hopes up too much.

This evening we went to a presentation on the 1964 9.2 Alaska earthquake.   We’re now lounging just inside the balcony from earlier looking out for the mountain.  Tomorrow morning we leave early on a bus to Anchorage and will be catching a plane to Seattle and then to Portland to see my aunt and her family.

Addendum:  McKinley came out!  I've added some pictures.
