I camped about eight miles north of the touristy village of Lake Place at a small campground right next to Whiteface overlooking the gorgeous Au Sable. The weather became crystal clear. Since this was my first time in the area, I decided to do a loop that day up through Jay (where there is the oldest covered bridge in New York) and spend another night. As I was lunching by the rapids in the middle of nowhere, Fred Sherry (a cellist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center who I have know for years) and his wife Carol wandered by, They were renting a house nearby.
