(Tessa) I had the privilege(challenge?) of working with the park's only male ocelot, Rico, for my first month here. I haven't personally seen all the cats in the park, but he's rumored to be the best looking cat in the park!
The idea is to hike up to his cage at 9am, let him out onto his runner for about an hour because he's too playful right away to go for a walk, and then walk for the rest of the day until around 4pm. Something's been a little off with Rico lately though because he just NEVER wanted to walk with me. For my first three weeks with him he stayed on his runner the whole day and I sat in my hammock and read. My last week with him though we did make a breakthrough! We went on our first real walk! Gone for seven hours! It was extremely exciting, but also stressful considering I didn't know the trails at all. Got pretty lost. Rico decided he didn't want to go back towards his cage either, so I almost had to literally drag him all the way home. After that we walked everyday!
He's a pretty cool cat. Everyone says he's very cheeky. He LOVES to lick. He also loves to play, which doesn't really feel playful. My arms and hands were completely covered in scratches while I was working with him. Luckily though, he only really made me bleed once! It was my second day of work, putting him back in his cage at night, I just didn't know him well enough at that point.
So all in all, working with him was a great experience but not really for me(I'm just not a cat person).
