Stage 82 Weisselfels to Solitaire 124km

A hilly ride to lunch then we turned onto a small road up to
the Spreetshoogte Pass. The road was like a roller coaster. Climb a hill then
roar down the other side and carry the speed up the next hill. When we reached
the pass the view was breathtaking. You can see the hills and plains of the
Namib desert for miles and miles. There is nothing but hills and scrub as far
as the eye can see. We then descended 500m in 4km which was pretty scary then
the road became sandy and difficult.

We stopped for a Coke at Camp Gecko, a campground along the
way and the only sign of civilization we had seen for hours. After having our
drinks we were offered a swim but, hot as we were, the pool appeared very green
and filled with insects so we passed.

Solitaire consists of a campground, a small general store and
gas station and surprisingly Moose MacGregor's Bakery. The bakery had fresh
apple pie and all kinds of other tasty treats. Most riders had two or three
items before dinner. We bought mutton and curry pies and cinnamon rolls to
store in our locker for rest day.
