Singapore wasn't on my original itinerary, but I kept hearing about it, and was encouraged to visit. I was familiar with its reputation of being a banking center, very clean – very strict laws about chewing gum, littering, not flushing toilets, spitting, graffiti, the list goes on and on, which the US should learn from. And I knew it was a shopper's paradise, with the island seemingly covered by high rise buildings.  I booked my to/from flights, and a four night stay without really doing my homework, just going by what people told me.

Once I started planning out my days, I was a bit disappointed, as Singapore doesn’t have what I search for in my traveling: architecture, history, museums, culture.  While it does have some of it, it doesn’t have enough to entertain me for the four days I will be here.  I knew I was in trouble when I started reading the tour books and websites and all listed Universal Studios as one of the top five attractions in the city/country.  Singaporeans, themselves, told me when I was there that it isn’t a place to travel to if you are looking for culture.  And the prices here are just outrageous.  However, after spending the last four weeks traveling through poor countries, I do see it as a chance to get in some western standards of living, so make the best of it.

My guidebook has four walking tours of the city, which I decide to spread out each day, as well as using the rest of the time just getting lost and exploring.  Today’s walking tour is to take in the historical district.   The walk is said to take four hours, but I complete it in two – time getting lost included, and find that only two of the stops can even remotely call themselves colonial – the Raffles Hotel and St Andrew’s Cathedral, an Anglican church that has served the British since the late 1880s.

The rest of the day is spent wandering around and trying to beat the heat and rain, as it has been storming in the afternoon for the last few days.
