What a great adventure for grandparents and their grandkids.

Seven years ago, when our oldest grandchild turned 10, I decided that toys and other gifts were short-lived and wanted to give him a memory of time spent with me. So a Road Scholar birthday adventure was the way to go.

So began the tradition of each grandchild's 1- year birthday trip via Road Scholar Interegnerational program. It's a wonderful adventure with no worries. There are hundreds of programs complete with instruction workshops, food, lodging, historical characters and places - and you don't have to do anything but enjoy with your grandchild.

To date, four of our grandchildren have turned 10 and each chose their adventure. Joe, the first, decided on a week in Leadville, CO, exploring silver mines, hot springs, cold rapids and fish farms - all at 8,000 feet elevation. On the way home, Joe said, "Grammy, this was the best trip I ever had."

Two years later, his brother, Jonnie, ventured into the land of the dinosaurs in Utah.  We slept under a dinosaur in an amazing "hands on" private museum, went to Olympic Village and a genuine rodeo, hunted for petroglyphs and met a sheriff who led us through the story of a mountain woman with whom he had actually hunted as a boy.

Katie turned ten in 2009 and, as our animal lover, chose to go to the San Diego program that took us behind the scenes at the San Diego Zoo and Sea World.  Amazing interactions with animals and sea life led to kayaking in Mission Bay and then into the Pacific Ocean for surfing lessons.  We even had dinner at Dobson's Restaurant one night, named after her uncle!

This summer, Grace turned 10 and as the performer in the family, she elected to go to Branson, MO for "Show Biz Kids".
We observed, heard and experienced live performances.  Learned from workshops with performers and on the last night, performed in a talent show.
Grace and I wowed the crowd with our rendition of "Side by Side"  vaudeville style.

We have 6 more grandkids to go.  And Road Scholar will be our choice for sharing adventures with them.    Everyone of the programs so far has established a bond with our grandchildren we will savor forever.
