So here we are in Guadalajara only an hours coach journey from the town of TEQUILLA. So it would be extremely rude not to pay a visit, Im sure you'll agree.

We went on an organised tour in English and Spanish although the guides accent was so thick he could of been speaking any language. We got chatting to a girl from Oz who was travelling by herself (brave lady) and a couple of Kiwis. We linked what words we had understood and between us got the jist of what was being said.

The tour took us to the Blue Agave fields, which is the cactus used to make Tequilla. A beautiful sight the fields really are blue. They stretch for miles over every part of the undulating mountainous landscape formed by the huge volcano which over shadows the area.

It takes 8 years for one cactus to grow to a size big enough for harvest. You can see in our photos a farmer demonstrating how they harvest the Agave. They cut it at the root and then hack all the leaves of so it looks like a giant pineapple.

And then for the Distillery. We were given a tour of the distillery of Jose Cuervos which is the one we have all over indulged in at home. The pineapples are steamed for 36 hours and then mashed up. The liquid and pulp are separated and the liquid is fermented in steel containers and then distilled. We were given a taste of the tequila straight from the distillery before it has had it alcohol content reduced it was 55% proof!!! Oh the burn!!! Not even the hardened Mexican men could knock this back without wincing. After it distilled it is rested in white oak barrels for different lengths of time depending on the quality of Tequilla.

After the tour we were given tasters of 3 types and a gorgeous Margarita to top it off! Cant say fairer than that!

Anyway, job done we've come to Mexico and been to Tequilla and i still think it a drink not to be savored and only to be drunk when common sense has left the building!
