For my third and final cultural opportunity (and for a little help with my lit salon) I watched the film Naked Lunch, from the novel by William S. Burroughs. The reason I chose this film from the list of movies was an easy.  William S. Burroughs was a great writer for the Beat Generation, and since that was my topic for the lit salons, why not kill two birds with one stone.  The movie did help me understand the writer, Burroughs, a little more, which in turn did help me on my final.  However, with that being said, I was not a fan of this movie at all.  It was extremely weird and graphic, exactly how Burroughs was as a writer.

The story really did not make much sense to me.  During my research, Burroughs intended that the chapters in the novel could be read in any order.  That could have been good reasons that the movie jumped around from bit to bit and made it difficult to follow.  Another thing about the movie that I felt was very interesting was every time that William Lee, the protagonist of the story, fell into a drug high he would encounter very strange monsters.  Some would even form from his typewriter and talk to him.  Very strange incidences inside a very strange story.  I also learned from researching that William Lee's character was based off of Burroughs himself.  That helped me understand a little more of Burroughs’ life.  Overall I hate to say it but I would probably not recommend this movie to someone unless they were doing research on William S. Burroughs himself.
