After our only airplane trip in Australia we found ourselves in Cairns. Here we found out why hostels in Australia are so expensive. It's because they offer so many services! We had free airport pickup, a cheap BBQ, and lots of information about what to see and do.
The BBQ was great. It had sausages, kangaroo, crocodile, and good veggie burgers. It also had entertainment in the form of forced audience participation digeridoo playing.
The next morning we got up early for our liveaboard trip. We learned that it was cheaper to book for one night and then extend once ou are on the boat so we just booked for one night and planned to stay for two more
Back on dry land we found a hostel near the lagoon. The lagoon was awesome! It is a shallow artificial saltwater swimming pool with a grasy area and a sandy area for sunbathing. It has bathrooms and showers and a lot of free electric grills. It's right on the coast so you can watch the surf while swimming in the lagoon. There is also a great jogging path.
We went to a lecture called Reef teach. The speaker was wonderfully dynamic and very knowledgeable. We learned about the most common types of fish and coral and wished we had gone before diving
The zoo was also worth seeing. Lots of crocs and fuzzy things. We got to hold a koala and they had two Nepalese red pandas which looked like a fox with a fuzzy tail. They were totally adorable but they looked hot. The zookeeper said that they did look hot but they don't mind coming out of their cold nighttime container every morning.
The next day we got our camper and prepared for our east coast adventure. Little did we know we were headed into the largest hurricane to hit Australia in thirty years (cyclone Larry).
