Is there a 4-month slump? Think I've hit it. Can't seem to muster up the energy to do anything. I did manage to swap hostels. I just couldn't handle the coed dorms with showers on the next floor and no where to change clothes but the cramped toilet. Checking into another one this afternoon. Hopefully it's a bit nicer.
Dragged myself out for a quick tour of Old Shanghai. Got a little lost on the way to Yuyuan Gardens, but it's really beautiful. Yuyuan means happy! Visited the Taoist Temple of the Town God. The communists converted it to a jewelry store for a time- funny. It's under renovation, but still pretty.
Inside the Gardens, I visited "Charm of Donggua- Exhibition of the Selected Collection of Ling Nan School Calligraphy and Painting of Dongguan Keyuan Garden." Pretty works from the late 1800's.
Went to the Old Town Bazaar- the entire complex is made of old temple-style buildings. Not sure if they're original. Waited in a very long line for "famous Shanghai steamed crab dumplings". Think I got duped. The were yummy, but tasted and looked alot like pork dumplings- ¥20.
From there I walked to The Bund. Packed with people! Very pretty river views and famous Baroque buildings like the Old British Customs House and the Fairnont Peace Hotel, once the most prestigious building in Asia- the Cathay Hotel when it opened in 1929.
Made my way back via East Nanking Road- think it's Shanghai's Times Square.
