Time was passing rapidly for us in Dunedin...lots to do,see and eat...we got distracted until one day we looked at one another and said "where in the hell is the bloody sun?" We looked at each others bodies and realized we had gone completely pallid.Out came the travel books, the online searches and it was decided....Fiji. Sounds exotic,no?

Well, it was. We are down here in the Southern half of the planet so why not go for it. Lot of fun places to choose from...Tahiti(don't want to put up with the French)...New Caldonia(same and expensive to boot)...Niue(hard to get to)...talked to some Kiwis...Fiji wa sit.

Found a wee resort on a distant island in the Yasawa group of outer Fijian islands and booked a resort called OCTOPUS..go there, it is wonderful. Getting there was a bitch though.

Left Dunedin one morning, flew to Auckland and waited around the airport till !0 pm and caught a flight bound for Los Angeles that stops in Nadi, capital of Fiji. Checked into hotel at the airport ...then were to catch Helicopter next AM to island. Big storm...back and forth to helipad till clear? to fly.

Lifted off with one stop before our island to let out two passengers at nearby upscale resort. Flew right past the island where Tom Hanks filmed CASTAWAY...Past island where BLUE LAGOON was filmed then into a storm for our stop on a mountaintop in a driving rain for a slippery steep walk to our village resort.

Resort fed and watered us..gave us our bure(house)on the beach and it was great. Took way too many clothes...never wore shoes...lived in same shorts...had a shirt or two and that was it. Snorkeled all day on reef 50 meters off beach...ate great community meals with about 60 other guests scattered amidst the property. Met great folks, mostly Brits and Aussies...laughed way too much. Drank Kava every night with the natives who were the nicest, friendly people on the planet...I was named Chief of Chiefs for the stay and we were invited to walk over the mountain to their village for church on Sunday.

Absorbed lots of harmful UV rays that made our skin dark again...made lots of friends and left with a tear or two in our eye...would go back in a heartbeat.

I use to live before Octopus, I absolutely love the Yasawas.
Were you there when Polly and Ross were managing the property?
