HOLA AMIGOS!!!
Our last week here has been an eventful one. Sunday we went to Fuentes Georginas and soaked away all our worries. It was incredible, the water from the baths literally is coming out of rocks. It is located half way up a volcanoe in the rainforest. The view was amazing! I got a lot of great pictures. We met some really cool girls from Demark and have been hanging out with them almost every day.
The last few days in Xela have been a bit crazy. There were litterally 5,500 people from small villages in the country here in Xela to collect money from only one bank (mostly indigenous mayans). Apparently the government has hired these people over 15 years ago to fight against the guerillas and protect their villages/surrounding cities, and they have not yet been paid. The new president here promised that if he was elected he would make sure that they would all get the money they deserve. There were lines literally all around the central park and up 10 blocks. They waited 3 days and nights, and eventually all were paid, but not what they were promised.
We have grown very fond of our family, and unfortunetly something very bad happened last night. When we came home for dinner we found our mom crying hysterically. Some one fed her cat Carmela some poison and she died, leaving behind her 10 day old kittens. It was a very sad situation, but Jenna and I jumped to action. We immediately went to the internet to find ot how to care for them, translated them into spanish, and early this morning we set out for a vet., and bought the family everthing they will need to take care of the babies. The family is heart broken but VERY grateful for everything we did. They are very poor and would not have been able to afford the special formula, bottels, heater ect. We are officially TIAS (aunts)!!!
We have learned a lot, met cool people from all over the world, and tomorrow we are headed for our next destination, Montericco. Montericco is on the Pacific coast of Guatemala, with only black sand beaches. We are a bit warn out from our 2 weeks of study, and I am ready to soak up some sun on some black sand beaches. I have never seen one before! March 17th is Jennas birthday, and we are headed for San Pedro in Lake Atitlan for a huge St.Patrics day celebration. We plan on staying in San Pedro for 2 weeks to continue studying spanish. I am not sure if there will be internet in Montericco, so I will make an update as soon as I can!
