Day 123. That has a nice ring to it doesn't it.  It is also the 16th Feb which means it is four calendar months since I left the UK.  And it is now just 10 days before I will be back in Bognor.  Blimey.

Part of me had intended to come to Carson City and stay in bed for four days.  When I woke at 7am this morning I peered out the window and saw that it was a beautiful day and I could not just sit in and look at it.  Even with this enthusiasm it was still approaching 11 before I was in my car and heading to the extremely friendly and helpful visitor centre in Carson City.  Armed with a pile of info I set out for a gentle walk.  Carson City is a very understated and pleasant state capital that has a population of less than Bognor!  It is surrounded by mountains (all snow covered this time of year) and its tree lined streets hold numerous historic Victorian houses.

After the morning constitutional I took a drive up to Virginia City a town that grew up to service the mining of the Comstock Silver Lode.  It is high up in the hills (over 6000ft) and still has its wooden boardwalks.  It was a pleasant drive and wander but there was little to detain.  On the way back down the winding state road I was struck the Tenacity of the people that built the V&T railroad – it winds and ascends the hills at nearly the same gradient as the road and you have to wonder how the trains ever got up it.

And that was my gentle day over – once back at the hotel I did my laundry and started up another round of Soccer Manager – even though I know it will crash eventually.  What can I do – I am addicted just like I was back in my PhD days when I first played it.

What I listened to.  A whole bunch of stuff.  The wonderful is slightly over-wrought Grace by the late great Jeff Buckley.  The ethereal and beautiful Cathedral Oceans by John Foxx (yes the one who was in Ultravox before Midge Ure).  I followed this up with Kevin Drew’s Spirit If – but this unfortunately sounds too much like a collections of Broken Social Scene off-cuts.  I then got all regal.  No not the compete works of Queen but you are on the right track.  First up was all of the gently gently sounds of Kings of Convenience and after that all of the sweaty and southern fried sounds of Kings of Leon.  Last up was a great and as far as I can tell solitary album from King Louis called Generation I Want.  This is a great album and has one of my favourite tracks – Beautiful Friend – try it out and see what I mean.
