Where I stayed
Hilton Garden Inn, St George, Utah
So I got myself round to the tramway – which is basically a really big cable car – for 10.30 and it was already busy. I nearly missed the half hourly service thanks to the people in front of me in the queue engaging the only lady serving in an inane conversation about nothing at all – hello! People waiting here!
The cable car has a revolving floor so as you go up you get to see 360 degrees of view without having to move which is a very cool idea (and according to the commentary also very very expensive!)
I went for a gentle wander along the valley behind the tram station which was 5 inches deep in snow and delightfully crisp and calm. Had I been up early and more importantly in some semblance of fit I could have scaled the 10500 peak of San Jacinto Mountain the highest in Southern Ca but that is well beyond me currently even without the added bonus of thin air! I settled for the 1.5 mile loop round the valley and was happily wandering, wondering and saying hello (and even a few Kia Ora's) to everyone when I made way for a group of young people who HAD to tell me all about God. Apparently they were up there experiencing his wonder and stuff – which is fine by me but I could probably have used the time on actually looking at said wonder. I cunningly directed them the big trees at Humbolt – as they are wonderful – and made my excuses.
The scenic lookout was swamped by more people from the same group and as they were mid sermon I couldn’t really push through for some pictures. I decided to shin up a nearby rock and successfully got some shots without tumbling apex over base all the way back down to Palm Springs. Sadly my poise was nowhere in evidence when I made my way the eight feet back down the rock. I fell over once and whilst the congregation were all looking my way to check I was OK – I fell over again. Oh the comedy!
That was enough snow for one day!
