Once upstairs and entering the clinic, it was obvious that even though it looked right, they weren't in Kansas anymore. They were each given a clipboard and asked to make comments on what they saw, what they liked, what they disliked and how would they fix it.
There was a short orientation meeting and explanation of some of the rules of the road, Clinic. I paired them off and had them process each other as a new patient so they could get the feel of the paperwork and realize that except for some Chinese words on some of the pages, it was just like Clinic in Marietta
Latrice and Ernestine won the MWF AM shift and were the first on the block so to speak with the patients on Wednesday morning. That meant the Patrick and Leigh were taking the alternating afternoons. Both shifts ran very smooth and we processed 24 patients that day. The interns fit in like old pro's and Patrick has been working very hard on his Chinese communicating skills and laughing with the patients as they correct him and sometimes have a puzzled look on their faces. I haven't heard too much out of the ladies, but I'm sure they will come along as soon as they realize how much fun it is.
Thursday was just as good with the AM and PM shifts exchanging and each saw 8 regular patient visits and a new patient, so we ended the day with 16 visits and 2 new patients. Each of the interns has already done a consultation and several reassessments. They are already starting to realize that there are things here they would probably never see anywhere else. They have hit the ground running and are going to fit in great with the patients and staff and the folks at the Hospital.
What a great start to the quarter and a fabulous experience in China.
