Yesterday we got the ferry from BA to Montevideo, it was eventful. Our first taxi dropped us at what we thought was the port we were catching the ferry from. After 15 minutes of asking people where the SeaCat went from, we were told we were at the wrong port. Panic hit in, we grabbed another taxi to the other port, traffic was terrible but we got there and checked in on time....phew! We felt like those people on The Amazing Race that get screwed over by the taxi men! Once we arrived and settled into our hotel (first of the trip) we went for dinner close by. I was happy out watching Grey's Anatomy for the night as it was the first English TV I had seen since we left home.
Today (23rd) we moved to our hostel which is kinda like a hippy house! It's quirky and kinda cool but again we get the room by the street so we will hear the traffic yet again (we have had noisy rooms in Rio and BA)
We explored Montevideo today but it was gale force winds! It was hard to walk at times. It is an old city full of old buildings. Not as pretty as Buenos Aires, a lot more rubbish on the streets etc. We had the Uruguayan speciality for lunch which is called Chivoto which is like a steak sandwich with egg, bacon, lettuce, tomato, ham, olives, cheese served with chips. We ordered one to share and it was lots! Was really nice but not sure how you would not be huge if you ate this every day. We then walked down to the pier where the water was gushing over the wall, the wind had not eased! Added a photo and video of wind.
On the walk back to the hostel we treated ourselves to afternoon tea with a waffle with ice cream and another speciality of Argentina and Uruguay, Duche de leche which is like a sweet caramel. Was yum. (see photos!).
Returned to hostel and managed to get the guy who was hogging the tv to put the utd game on. We bought a little (big) bottle of beer and sat down to enjoy utd winning 3-2 after being 2-0 down. Tonight we are going to eat in (the first time since we have been away). We bought a roll, tuna, cheese and tomato in the supermarket.....looking forward to it!
We are going to stay in out of the wind for tonight, tomorrow is supposed to be a better day where we can hopefully get a better view of this city.
Till then, adios from "the chicas" as we have been named here (we like it!).
