I think that there is an unwritten rule in the laws of teachers that require them to all assign exams, assignments and quizzes the last few days before any holiday.  This April Holiday was no exception.  On the positive side, I was able to enjoy my vacation to the fullest.  I spent my holiday with my roommate, Frank and his South African girlfriend, Preya on a presumptuous road trip of nearly the entire country.  We covered a good two thirds of a country the size of Spain and France combined in little more than nine days.  We took Preya's bakkie, which is a small pickup truck, for the task with its two seats and spacious bed.  Naturally, I was sentenced to the rear, which does have a camper top.  But I can't really complain that much, I made it comfortable, bringing my mattress from my room and some blankets, so it was rather cozy.  My only complaint is that I had to go in reverse for several thousand miles and saw the countryside backwards.

On a chilly Sunday morning, we silently packed the car, none of quite fully awake at a quarter to seven.  And we were off!  Our first stop was for lunch about 150k off of our route, thanks to Frank's superb navigational skills, and Preya's virtual incompetence of understanding directions of any sort.  Outside of Gauteng, the province that I live in, the land quickly dries up and vegetation becomes sparse.  The land is mostly flat besides the distant mountains that tower along the horizon.  We passed an occasional windmill, stubbornly trying to draw a drop of moisture for the baked earth, as we continued along a treadmill of a road that stretched as far as one could see ahead and behind.

After miles and miles with no real signs of civilization, Upington, was a welcome sight.  We spent a rather uneventful night in a hostel with a sour old American hippie and two rather odd Germans.

Great photos
This jaunt across the country seemed quite eventful. The German guest seems knappy. I hope his personality was better than his apperance. You do look comfortable in the back, but I would not like riding backwards. Glad to see you posting again, especially with pictures.
