The Noguchi Museum is in a warehouse district in Long Island City (Queens area). It was opened in 1985 as the first and only museum in the country that was founded by an artist during his lifetime and dedicated to his work. It had been one of Noguchi's studio workshops before he began to work primarily in Japan. He added to the original building to create the museum space. It was very important to him that his pieces be exhibited in appropriate space. There is also a small garden at the entrance that holds several of his larger pieces. One of its singular features is that the museum space incorporates outdoor features through windows and a courtyard that is both walled and open to the outside. In the Museum are found examples of the many stages of Noguchi's development shown both through completed works and plans and models..
