This is the day that we went to Petra and then we went  back to the restaurant that we had gone to the night before.

We got to to the ticket office shortly after 7 am in order to beat the crowds.  Abdul reluctantly agreed but was upset with Erwin because he had arranged cheaper packed lunches for us.

There was a rather long road...you could see the old stones from the original road and the conduits for water alongside.  I forget how long it was before we entered the narrow canyon itself.  This part was quite awesome....the high walls of rock and the carvings in various places that Abdul pointed out.  Then after awhile he tricked us by concentrating our attention otherwise while we came to the point where we could glimpse the Treasury through the narrow canyon opening.  It was breathtaking.  The clearing in front of the Treasury was now beginning to fill up.  There were people, carts and horses, camels.

After the Treasury we continued along to the huge valley where several trails led up to other buildings carved into the rock.  As a group, we walked to the monastery.  This was quite a hike up several sets of stairs.  From there you could go up farther to several lookout points....one the point of sacrifice.  There were some major drop-offs here.  On the way back I saw some goats who were calling to one another.  One black one scrambled down the rocks to be with its buddy.  Some people rested here where there was a cafe, most of us ate all or some of our packed lunches - there was a lot to them.  Then we split up...some stayed there, some headed back and several of us followed Erwin up another trail to a lookout and more ruins.

This was the trail that I had some difficulty with...since it was steep and my balance and eyesight seem to hinder me.  Pam looked out for me very carefully and I was very well cared for.  Despite this, I managed to fall as I was coming down from the tricky lookout point.  I had gotten up it by crawling sort of on all fours but down apparently proved more challenging.  Luckily I didn't hurt my camera which was dangling from my neckstrap.  We managed another section and saw the most brilliantly colored rocks of our time in Petra.  By the time we reached the canyon floor, we were all pretty worn out, including the others who had done their own thing....except for Erwin of course, who has unlimited energy.

We found Betty at the Treasury and then I trailed behind with her.  We both took more photos and took our time walking out.  It was a longer walk than I remember coming in.  We could have gotten a horse ride for free or a calash ride, but we didn't want to wimp out.  We stopped for some souvenirs and then found Erwin, Pam and Tom at the Cave Bar where we had some liquid refreshment.  The cave bar was at a guest house where we all thought that Explore should book but Erwin thought it would add 100 pounds (the money) to our costs.  Oh, well....
