Today I drove through some of the most fascinating terrain I have ever driven through. As said previously we are staying high up in the mountains South West of Modena and north west of Bologna. Modena is a couple of hours south of Milan and an hour and a half north or Florence. Whichever way we go it is about an hour from the highway to our Tower. We have now done the trip from the highway three times and each time differently as Francesca insists on taking us a different way each time.
I have to say though that the stretch of the Autostrada between Bologna (south of Modena) were we entered the highway, and Florence where we exited passes through the most incredible scenery I have seen (although my passengers kept reminding me that as I was travelling at 130 kph on a fully loaded Autostrada my job was to let them do the viewing and to get them safely into Florence and back in one piece)………..but I snuck a peak occasionally!!!!. The highway from Bologna is initially high up and descends as you approach Florence. The road for the most part is either hanging off the side of a cliff or going through the mountains by tunnel (at least 2 dozen). The scenery is breathtaking………….vast valleys rolling up to towering cliffs with the odd church hanging out on a nob overlooking the highway. The Italians drive like lunatics……..the highways are two or three lane, the right lane is mostly semitrailers carting product from North to south or south to north (we counted 50 in a one kilometre stretch) and whatever the speed limit is (130 kph most times) it is regularly and consistently broken by most drivers which forces us in our Ford CMax into the outside lane with the semis as the rather large and black beemers, mercs, audis etc roar up behind us with lights flashing.
I love driving…and have done all but a short amount on this trip leaving NavAlan and now NavFrancesca to navigate. I would love to be in the Red Audi doing this trip. Maybe next time.
I must admit to taking a couple of wrong turns the day before our trip to Florence which saw us heading up the A1 towards Modena when we should have been heading west towards Zocca – small detour and you always see something you would not have otherwise seen.
As we headed home from Florence we set Francesca to take us home by the quickest route. Once off the Autostrada the trip was fascinating with the grand finale being a ""less then”” one lane road between two buildings with no more then a inch or two either side that all of a sudden popped us out in the backstreet of Montombraro where we had already parked a couple of times to visit the Festival. From one extreme (the Autostrada) to the other (winding single roads in country Italy in the rain)………….again the most incredible scenary.
Once home we had no choice but to roll out the red and plan the next day………….
