2010 U.S. Road Trip – Day 31 -
7/19/2010 – Yellowstone, WY

We will spend the day touring
Yellowstone. We started in the south and headed north on the western
path. We made stops at thermal pools and some small geysers. The
geysers and thermal pools were accessible by raised walkways. We
also made a stop at Old Faithful but the next eruption would not
occur until 45 minutes later as predicted by the park staff. So we
determined that we didn't want to wait since we had seen an eruption
yesterday evening and we had a long day ahead of us.

As we traveled north there were miles
and miles of thermal pool areas. We saw plenty of elk but didn't
stop to take any photos because we had already seen plenty of elk the
day before. Elk in yellowstone are like white tailed deer at home.
They are everywhere. We wanted to see some of the other animals that
Yellowstone had to offer. We traveled north until we reached Mammoth
Hot Springs where we made a turn eastward. Mammoth Hot Springs is a
small town within Yellowstone. The hot springs are a nice site to
see. The springs run down the mountain creating a very colorful
rock.

Not long after turning eastward we were
treated with a black bear sighting at the Petrified Tree exhibit.
This was exactly what were were looking for. Black beer sightings
are not as common as elk sightings but they do occur regularly at
Yellowstone. After taking some photos were continued our trip east
until the path turned to the south on the eastern trail of the park.
The eastern path contained some spectacular water falls and canyons.
After taking in some views of the canyons and waterfalls we were
treated with another view of a bear. This time it was a grizzly and
2 cubs. We were told earlier by a family we had spoken with that the
momma bear and 2 cubs were in the area. We stopped along with
several other motorist to take photos. Soon after the bear sighting
we saw a single buffalo grazing in a field. The buffalo didn't seem
to mind us at all be we were very careful and didn't stray too far
from the truck.

It was getting late in the evening and
we needed to eat dinner before dark so we stopped at one of the many
picnicking sites in the park. By the time we finished eating it was
dark. We headed back to camp to get ready for the next day. On our
way back to camp a buffalo crossed the road just in front of us.
This buffalo was huge. We had only seen a few lying in the field
before but this one was walking across the road and it was huge.
