2010 U.S. Road Trip – Day 5 -
6/23/2010 – Destination Bentonville, AR
Today we will spend the day with my
cousin, his wife, and 3 kids. We traveled south to Bentonville to
visit the Walmart museum, the original 5-10 (five and dime) store in
downtown Bentonville. We didn't get to tour the original store
because the museum was undergoing a major renovation but we did get
to view the store from the outside. We also made a visit to
Walmart's home office. One would think that a home office for a
major company would be housed in a nice multistory building. This
was not the case for Walmart. Walmart's home office is just a large
warehouse with an appealing front built onto it.
We were also treated with a view of the
new Crystal Bridges, a major art museum that is being built in
Bentonville. The project is being funded by a daughter of Sam
Walton. As we traveled around town we could see that Walmart is
definitely the glue that holds Bentonville together. One of Sam
Walton's sons even has his own bank, Arvest
Back at the house the kids went down to
the stream to catch minnows and crawfish, which was something new for
the kids. They had lots of fun and now we prepare for another day.
