2010 U.S. Road Trip – Day 3 -
6/21/2010 – Destination Memphis, TN

We will travel to Memphis, TN via route
72 which menders through Alabama, Mississippi, and finally Tennessee.
Not much to see on this route. We stopped for a lunch break at a
park pavilion near a river in Burnsville, MS. We arrived in Memphis,
TN in the middle afternoon and now the search was on for
accommodations for the night. The first campground, Meeman-Shelby
State Park, was deserted and looked a little rundown. We decided to
look elsewhere. We were able to find another campground about 65
miles north off of route 51. We stocked up at a Wal Mart and then
headed north to Fort Pillow State Historic Park on the Mississippi
River.

Once we arrived we drove through the
campground and this one was deserted too but the grounds were well
kept and not as rundown as the previous campground. At first the
kids were not enthusiastic about staying at this campground for the
night and really wanted to go back to town and get a hotel room. But
I convinced them to stay for the night. We were the only campers for
the night. We literally had our own personal campground and bath
facilities.

Once we setup camp we prepared dinner
and sat down for a nice quiet dinner. The mosquitos were horrible
but we were prepared with some bug repellant. About 10 minutes into
dinner my daughter yelled and I figured it was do to the mosquitos
but then she said “a raccoon.” I turned around to look behind me
and there he was less than 3 yards behind me. We all jumped up
quietly and the raccoon started to move towards the table where we
had been sitting. We decided to yell and charge towards the raccoon
which caused it to retreat back into the bush. But this didn't stop
the raccoon from coming back. We encountered this raccoon 2 more
times before dinner was over. We had to eat fast and get the food
stored in the truck before we went to bed. During the night the
raccoon came back to get food scraps out of the trash can as we could
hear the trash can tops hitting the ground at several other camp
sites nears us including ours.

This was truly an exciting night and we
are happy we chose to stay at this campground.
