Well, we're still in Catania and in some ways feel we have been here forever!! We wanted to leave Sicily last Sunday and went to the train station to learn that all trains were full for about a week.. We worked about all day trying bus, boat and plane but nothing seemed to be working out.. We are still having terrible language problems as few people speak any English (yes, I know it's Italy and they shouldn't) and the gal at the hotel desk was very helpful and tried hard to help us.
I finally got the number for another airline out of here and called them and after about six transfers got someone who could understand a bit of English.. The hotel gal had only tried Air Italia and they wanted $1200.00 for one way seats to Florence but this other line gave us a deal and it will only cost about $400.00 so weàre booked for Wed. AM...
Tomorrow we go on a tour, there are very few here even though this is a city of 300,000, to Mt Etna so we are looking forward to getting out of Dodge for a bit. I just haven't had the guts to rent a car or scooter since we've been in Italy and I thought sure that's what we'd do... I've never seen such driving in all my travels and of course there are few signs to go by. We rented in Greece and had no problem but this country is just full of crazy drivers. Sometimes they stop for red lights and sometimes they don't..
We had been staying in a four star hotel here but they only open the restaurant for a few hours so it's not easy to eat when you feel like eating. We had to leave that hotel today as they were booked and we've moved to a little place on the Duomo (main plaza)but they don't have an elevator so I told them I had bad knees and we got the only room on floor 0 (the lobby floor is always 0) It's clean and the price in half as much as we were paying so that's good.
The trip from Sorrento to Catania by train was nine hours and thank god we went first class rather than standard.. We did get to see more of the countryside but not very pretty next to the tracks just as in the USA.
We went to the fish market today and had lunch which was an experience.. I now carry a list of most food words or we'd never be able to eat but Sukie had some mussels today and was in heaven as they tasted good to her. We will not come home with more pounds than we when we left the states, that's for sure..
We're both looking forward to getting farther north and we're going to check that area
out and then figure out what's next... More later.. Suk and Dave

Back on the homestead--
Sounds like you are having fun, you two.
The first hurricane aimed at us petered out to a storm and not much of one at that by the time it got here. I'll keep up on your trip and talk to you later.
