(Backlog 2)

New Year's Eve was really special for me here. I've never celebrated major holidays before with anyone except my family, but here people mostly celebrate with their friends. There were maybe 40 of us 20 somethings packed in a tight, cold rented room with pink walls and high ceilings at 8 pm sitting with hordes of food and alcohol. The first hour or two, everyone is in their seat talking with friends and munching mindlessly. Then the music started, the lights went off and blood started to rise in cheeks as the first wave of vodka broke through social barriers and flooded the nervous system. And suddenly, I had people to talk to because almost all the younger generation knows English, they are just too shy to speak it while sober. Every minute there was good conversation or someone to dance with. I have never been very supportive of drinking that much, but now I have a better understanding and can appreciate it once in a while.
The whole time there was no TV, no special lights or games, just people with their friends and others welcoming the New Year's arrival. At midnight we walked out into the snow to watch villagers shoot off their small-time fireworks in every direction. Beautiful.
