Sunset over the Breakaways

Flag of Australia  , South Australia,

Today we set off early for a 538km drive from Port Augusta to Coober Pedy.  It was easy really without the van.  Only stopped twice, once for driver swap and also for a driver reviver.  Oops forgot the stop to photograph the eagles we saw.  There were about half a dozen all together gnawing on a freshly deceased animal right on the edge of the road.  Luckily Doug saw them in time to stop and get some really good photos.

Lots of changing scenery along the way from average scrub, bare earth, salt lakes, cattle station country and a few hills.

About 50km south of Coober Pedy there is quite a bit of mining activity including gold, iron ore and a variety of other minerals.  We wondered what a helicopter was doing flying around but when we got closer we saw that it had a big circular aerial hanging below which we assumed was doing magnetic geophysical surveys.

We went on a sunset tour of the Breakaways Reserve which included the Moon Plains, Dog Fence (this is currently 5300km's, originally 9600km's across 3 states).  Dog meaning dingo.  The Moon Plain has been the scene of many movies (Mad Max, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Ground Zero).  The Mica fields are really gypsum, the difference being Mica is very hard and you can't scratch it.

The changing landscape was very impressive although the sunset wasn't as good as it could have been (Doug's opinion - no clouds etc).
