Relics of the copper mining industry

Flag of Australia  , South Australia,
Saturday, April 13, 2013

It is amazing how many towns in the area started from mining of some mineral or other, today it is Copper yesterday salt the day before copper again.

Wallaroo had the largest copper smelter in the world at the time (1860's) and it produced mainly copper but also silver, gold and sulphuric acid.  Wallaroo completes the copper triangle of which we visited all three towns.

We stopped at Warooka to get some milk and tried to put lotto on but the Hotel (yes hotel) didn't open until 10.30am so we kept going and stopped at Minlaton, put the lotto on then proceeded to Moonta which was bigger again than Minlaton although on the maps we had all these towns looked about the same size.  We did enjoy mooching around the towns though.

After we arrived at Wallaroo we headed 10km's down the road to Kadina which is the 3rd town of the triangle (Moonta being the other).  This seems to be the biggest of these towns now with a Woolworths, BWS etc.  We still can't get over how many beautiful older homes have been retained in all these towns.

From Marmion Bay to Walleroo is also a very productive cereal growing area, so the countryside we travelled through today looks very ,much like the farming area around KA.  Also lots of familiar names on all the Memorials around.

In between listening to the Eagles game on the radio (yes you guessed it!  No TV coverage again) we went for a walk along the coastline between the wharfs and the grain terminal.  We dipped our toes in the Spencer Gulf and decided we didn't want a swim today.  The water is still coming from the south pole.

After the football had finished we walked around the town looking at the history and old buildings filling in time before we phoned Lori for her unmentionable birthday.

Heading off early tomorrow for Hawker.
