Chicago Day One

I started by relaxing in bed a little longer than usual on this trip. Breakfast was a simple breakfast at the Holiday Inn spread. Next I caught the courtesy shuttle van to Midway Airport to pick up the Orange Line El train downtown. I took the Orange Line then transferred to the Red Line to get near the Holy Family Cathedral.

I attended the 9:30 mass at the cathedral which is absolutely beautiful. The cantor has an incredible operatic voice. After mass I walked around a little to see where to pick up the tour trolley.

At 11:30, I boarded a very crowded train out to Wrigley Field for the Cubs vs. the Pirates. The train ride out was just like in the movies. The train runs right against some old homes that look like they could fall down at any minute. I had no problem securing a ticket in the last section down the right field line. We had some drizzle before the game, but clear skies during the game. It was a good game. The Cubs won 6-1. The one Pirate run came on a home run to the left field outfield. The fans yelled, "Throw it back!" and so the ball came back down onto the field. It was neat seeing the green outfield wall and the rooftop fans. I ate a slice of pizza outside the stadium prior to entering, so I did not sample any of the stadium cuisine (I also bought a bag of peanuts outside). The only problem was getting the train back downtown due to the incredible rush of people. Some actor I never heard of sang "Take Me Out to The Ballpark." I listened to Saturday's game on my car radio, and Digger Phelps sang that time.

Following the game, I took the train back downtown and walked to Navy Pier; a popular tourist attraction with rides and restaurants. At the entrance to the park you find a statue of Bob Newhart sitting in a chair. See the photo album for this entry for two pictures. I then took a half-hour boat tour of Lake Michigan to see the city from the water. After the tour, I ate at Joe's Be-Bop Cafe on the pier. I tried the BBQ rib tips. Too much work for not enough food.

Following dinner, I caught the free pier trolley back across town to take the Red Line to the Orange Line back to Midway. At Midway, I picked up the free shuttle again to return to the Holiday Inn.
