Timeline for Cheyenne to Omaha
6:45 AM
Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral in downtown Cheyenne. Interesting tidbit: Wyoming has so few Catholics that the whole state is one diocese.
7:30
The Holiday Inn has a full-service restaurant. I was not hungry for full breakfast, so I grabbed a Gatorade and muffin at the convenience store next door. I then spent some time relaxing, reading the USA Today.
8:45
Depart for Omaha.
9:15
Omaha 459 miles.
9:25
Cross into Nebraska.
10:15
Pass by the world headquarters of Cabela's (The world's foremost outfitter of hunting, fishing, and outdoor gear) in Sidney.
10:50
Omaha 350 miles.
11:25
Cross into Central Time Zone.
Also, by this time, I enjoyed the view of numerous center pivot and hyrdrostatic sideroll irrigation systems at work on the corn and soybean fields. This old irrigation guy's heart went pitter-pat. I put a CD of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" into the CD player. The music just seemed to match as the majestic center pivots and siderolls sprayed their water and fertilizer.
12:15 - 12:45
Lunch at the Pizza Hut in Gothenburg. I opted for the salad and mushroom personal pizza lunch combo.
1:10
Omaha 200 miles.
1:40
Pass under the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument. This is a cool arch covering both sides of I-80 that commemorates the old wagon trail. To learn more, visit www.archway.org.
1:55
Lincoln 105 miles.
Omaha 150 miles.
2:10
Bathroom and windshield washing stop in Grand Island.
3:00
Omaha 90 miles.
3:45
Gas stop in Lincoln.
4:30
Arrival at Quality Inn in Omaha. Local time is 5:30.
Total miles: 501.
The Quality Inn is on the western outskirts of town. I did not feel like driving into town, so I opted for the Cracker Barrel conveniently located a few feet away. I ate the barbecue pork sandwich on toasted sourdough with a cup of clam chowder instead of fries.
I am not able to pick up the wireless signal from the Quality Inn, but I am picking up the signal from the Countryside Suites next door. Go figure.
